
The citizenship is the status of being a citizen, along with rights, duties privileges of being a citizen.
The Citizenship Act,1955
In 1955 the parliament of India enacted a act which known as Indian citizenship act which is governed by the part-2(Articles 5 to 11) of the constitution of India. the citizenship act has been amended several times such as in 1986,1992,2003,2005,2015and2019.

The citizenship act,1955 prescribes five ways of acquiring citizenship:-
- By birth
- By descent
- By registration
- By Naturalization
- By Incorporation of Territory

Some Important Amendments Related to Citizenship act:-
- The Citizenship(amendments)act,1986:- Restricted citizenship by birth to require that at least one parent had to be an Indian citizen.
- The Citizenship(amendment)act,2003:- Further restricted that aspect by requiring that a parent could not be an illegal Immigrant.
- Mandate the government of India to construct a NRC(national register of citizens. It has been implemented for the state of Assam starting in 2013-2014. Also government of India plans to implement it for the rest of the county in 2021.
- The Citizenship(amendment)act,2019:- Provides citizenship for minorities of religion such Hindus, Sikh, Buddhists, Jains, Parsi and Christians who migrant from the Neighbouring countries Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan before December,2014.
- The bill was passed in Lok Sabha with 311 MPS voting in Favour and 80 against the bill and in Rajya Sabha with 125 votes in Favour and 105 votes against it.
- there has been much agitation about the citizenship(amendment)act,2019 such as:-
- failing foul of the constitutional guarantee of equality.
- the principles of secularism and the constitution's basic structure.
- granting citizenship on the basis of religion have given rise to large scale protests in India in 2019.
