- On 26 November 2021, The WHO designated it as a variant of concern and named it after omicron.
- The Variant has a large number of mutations, of which some are concerning.
- Several countries have rushed to impose travel restrictions on nations in southern Africa to curb the spread of the variant.
- India has not detected any case of the newly-discovered, highly transmissible Covid-19 variant. The Indian government has already put in place stricter guidelines for travellers coming from a transiting through ‘at risk’ countries.
