
Why In News
- Sambhar Lake is constantly shrinking with degradation of soil and water quality and a decline in the population of migratory birds.
- The study, undertaken by a research team of the Central University of Rajasthan school of Earth science has recommended an urgent action to restore the lake ecosystem for protecting the birds and biodiversity as well as the salt production.

- The Sambhar Lake is the India largest inland salt lake.
- In 1990, Sambhar Lake has been designated as a Ramsar site.
- The lake receives water from six rivers:- Mantha, Rupangarh, Khari, Khandela, Medtha and Samod.
- It is surrounded by the Aravali hills on all sides.
- It produces 196000 tonnes of clean salt every year, which is around 9% of India salt production.
