The gallantry awards are announced twice a year first on the occasion of Republic Day and then on Independence Day.

Wartime Gallantry Award

Established on:- 26 January 1950

Purpose:- To honour the acts of bravery and sacrifice of the officers/personnel of the Armed Forces.

  1. Param Vir Chakra:- Highest Military award in India.
  2. Maha Vir Chakra:- Second Highest Military award.
  3. Vir Chakra:- Third Highest Military award.

Peacetime Military Award

Established on:- 4 January 1952

Type:-
  1. Ashok Chakra:- Highest Peacetime Military award of India.
  2. Kirti Chakra:- Second Highest Peacetime Military award of India.
  3. Shaurya Chakra:- Third Highest Peacetime Military award of India.
